Russia, My Beautiful Shadow
An illustrated poem of a personal/national encounter
In 1993 Tim Holmes became the first American artist invited to exhibit in the greatest art museum on earth- The Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Having been cut off from the flow and power of contemporary art during 75 years of soviet control, the Russians were hungry for this fresh encounter. But perhaps the greatest gift came not as the art of an American sculptor to a broken nation, but as the fierce Russian devotion to art as a fundamental necessity of life. To the sensibilities of a privileged American, such profound homage to the inner life came as a powerful revelation- a coming home to a stranger.
