I don't know what it says about me that I am drawn to stark emotional contrasts of the kind that appear often in the Bible. Here is a moment in the terrible story of John the Baptist. He's been thrown in prison by King Harod, who is sympathetic and his wife Herodias, who hates John. She compels her daughter Salome to dance a striptease for the King, seducing him to promise her anything she asks. What she asks for is John's head on a silver platter. So here I come along, bringing in one mysterious and rather lovely image the strange juxtaposition of the lovely Salome with the prize head. I can't escape either the beauty or the horror.

Monotype unique print. 16 x 14.
